DRIVE-3 Unpacking and Assembly
The package contains a single stretch-wrapped assembly surrounded by some loose bubble pack. Please lift the assembly out from the box as one piece before unwrapping or cutting the clear plastic wrapping.
With the plate on a table you can make some cuts through the plastic stretch wrap and it should pull away in large pieces.
Put aside for later:
- the white cardboard box (contains the Birch interface and related items)
- the white cardboard box (contains the BE-17m extension bundle)
- The long folded steering shaft for MRI use
Gather these items for assembly:
- The steering and pedal assemblies attached to the white shipping plate
- The BN-D3 driving system bundle
- The short "trainer" steering wheel and column
Assembly
The short steering column with a steering wheel attached is provided for training and script debugging purposes, because the long steering column is unwieldy for desktop use.
The short steering column should have the shaft lock attached to it. Remove the stretch wrap, slide the short steering column through the pivot guide and then through the steering box. Add the shaft lock at the rear of the steering box. It can only go on the shaft in one orientation, so do not use force to attach it. Just try it in the opposite way if it does not go on at first.
With the steering shaft in place and the shaft locked, please turn the wheel back and forth a few times and just confirm that it returns to the center and does not seem to have any excess friction.
Also check that the gas and brake pedals move freely.
Assuming that is all fine, proceed to make the optical connections.
Optical Connections
The BN-D3 response device bundle has press-fit connectors for the steering, gas, and brake. These can be pressed in to the respective components and then left connected. They should be pressed in until they stop --if they are not pressed fully in the optical signals will be weak.
The connectors for the pedals have a triangular shape at the top so they can only be inserted in one way (they are labelled G for gas and B for brake):
Connect the steering assembly optics by pressing the 2-pronged connector in to the angled receptacle. The shiny black tubing should flow downwards. This is how it looks when fully inserted:

Now you can make the rest of the connections and test the system:
